Job Description

Job Title: RN Surgical Specialty

Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience in a med/surg unit, with step down experience.

License: Current RN License issued by the appropriate state Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License.

Certifications: Current Basic Life Support certification issued by the American Heart Association.

Must-Have:
– Travel experience
– Acute care surgical floor experience
– Experience caring for patients pre or post-surgical
– Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures
– Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services

Description:
Under general supervision, provides nursing care in a hospital to a variety of patients with health problems ranging from simple to complex.
Assumes responsibility for an assigned group of patients.
Documents patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments.
Notes all changes in physician orders on assigned patients.
Assists physicians in the examination of patients and in performing minor diagnostic procedures and treatments.
Obtains and monitors physiological data of patients.
Observes the physiological manifestations of patients and intervenes when necessary.
Administers medication as prescribed.
Initiates, regulates, and monitors intravenous infusions and blood products.
Delivers patient care competently.
Interacts with family and patients in sharing care plans while hospitalized and at discharge.
Informs patients and families of hospital procedures.
Makes referrals regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel.
Delegates tasks to support staff.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Nurses for this unit need Med Surg experience as the floor serves inpatients needing pre or post-surgical services.
Most experience required is surgical.
Candidates will care for post-operative patients and need experience taking care of patients with new drains, wounds, trachs, ostomies, or feeding tubes.
Some patients will require step down care as well.
Ratios are typically 5:1 for surgical patients and 3:1 for step-down area.
The unit also has step down patients and post-op patients that need close monitoring for reactions and infections.
Good verbal and written communication skills are essential.
Ability to respond effectively to the cultural and language needs of patients and visitors is required.
Some computer skills are necessary.
