Description:
This is a mixed acuity unit that cares for both PCU and Med Surg patients.
This is a very busy surgical floor.
All permanent staff is PCU trained.
Staffing ratio goal is 1:4, but can be 1:5.
Weekends are variable based on unit needs.
There is no set or blocked scheduling for permanent staff.
Self-schedule requests will be entered to balance and post the final schedule.
The first week of orientation is Monday through Friday day shift.
The second week consists of 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
Patient age groups include adults and geriatrics.
Patient diagnoses include surgical oncology for breast, thyroid, melanoma, and hepatobiliary cancers.
Colorectal conditions such as colon and rectal cancer are also treated, along with plastics for reconstructive breast cancer or sarcoma.
Special procedures in this unit include chemotherapy, blood transfusions, IV antibiotics, and management of oncologic emergencies such as cytokine release syndrome.
There is a heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient falls.
