Description:
Med/Surg Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.
In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of Med/Surg Nurses include consulting and coordinating with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
They prepare and administer medications and record prescribed treatments.
They report adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding medication administration by a licensed registered nurse.
They educate patients on surgical procedures.
They record patients’ medical information and vital signs.
They monitor and adjust specialized equipment used on patients and interpret and record electronic displays.
They initiate corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptoms.
They provide bedside care for a wide variety of medical patients, including pre- and post-surgery patients.
They initiate patient education plans, as prescribed by the physician.
They teach patients and significant others how to manage their illness or injury by explaining post-treatment home care needs.
They change dressings, insert catheters, and start IVs.
They prepare equipment and assist the physician during examinations and treatments of patients.
They respond to life-saving situations based on nursing standards and protocols.
They participate in discharge planning.
They utilize time management skills.
They record all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the necessary forms.
They perform other position-related duties as assigned, depending on the assignment setting.
