Experience: Minimum of 2 years Med/Tele experience required. First-time travelers will not be accepted.
License: Current RN license required.
Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS required.
Must-Have: Required skills include PIV starts, experience with dialysis catheter management, NG tube placement/management, pleurx drains, management of various surgical drains, and chest tube management. Peritoneal dialysis experience is preferred.
Description: This position is for a blended unit specializing in nephrology and oncology.
The facility has 457 licensed beds and is a trauma level III teaching hospital.
It is a Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center of Excellence.
The nephrology unit has 14 private rooms and no negative pressure capability.
Patient types primarily include ESRD, AKI, fluid resuscitation needs, and medical overflow.
Patients may require hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-5.
Support staff includes CNAs who assist with activities of daily living and are trained in phlebotomy and EKGs.
There is a resource nurse available when staffing allows.
There is also a hospitalist available 24/7 not dedicated to the unit.
Telemetry monitoring is available if ordered.
Orientation consists of 2 departmental days.
Scrub color for staff is navy.
The unit culture is professional and team-oriented.
Additional skills include comfortability with NG tube management and access for chemotherapy and biotherapy.
While oncology experience is preferred, it is not required.
Patient safety protocols are in place with various monitoring technologies throughout the unit.
