Description:
Department: LDRP RN – Float
Certifications Required: BLS (Preferred: ACLS, NRP, STABLE)
No clinical involvement.
Number of labor and delivery beds: 15 total – 7 labor and delivery, 8 postpartum.
Number of OR suites on the unit for C-sections: 1.
Number of births per month: Approximately 58.
Follows AWHONN guidelines for ratios: 1:1 for pitocin, magnesium, or insulin drips.
Couplet care ratio is 1:3.
Common diagnoses/types of patients include obstetric patients and neonates.
Common conditions treated are hypertension and gestational diabetes mellitus.
Delivery typically occurs after 36 weeks of gestation.
Experience or must-have skills: Ability to read and interpret fetal strips, critical thinking skills, adherence to quality metrics, previous travel experience required.
Nurses must be able to read strips and will float to Med-Surg and ER as needed.
RNs are required to titrate drips.
Common titratable or set rate drips include pitocin, insulin, magnesium.
A charge nurse is present on each shift and takes an assignment.
There are nurse aides or surgical techs on this unit performing various duties.
OB/Neonatology in-house coverage is not available 24/7.
Anesthesia in-house coverage is not available 24/7.
RT Equipment such as vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow is available.
RNs are not required to do anything with RT equipment besides troubleshooting.
Tele/Monitor Techs are not available on this unit.
RNs are required to read their own strips.
Brand of tele monitors used is Philips.
EFM System: Traceview/PIP.
EMR: Meditech.
Shifts and Scheduling:
Standard shifts are 0645-1915 and 1845-0715.
Self-scheduling is not allowed.
Block scheduling is allowed.
Weekend Requirements: Every other weekend.
Holiday Requirements: Every other holiday.
Call or standby requirements depend on staffing.
Floating requirements include Med-Surg and ER.
Permanent staff is usually the first to float.
Scrub color is maroon.
Scrubs are provided, and RNs will change into surgical scrubs upon arrival at the unit.
Orientation will consist of 3 shifts.
