Description:
The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high quality compassionate care to patients and families.
The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care.
He/She applies appropriate interventions and evaluates patient progress.
The ED RN evidences skill in using various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions to manage life-threatening and routine emergency situations.
Utilizing the principles of relationship-based care, the ED RN alleviates anxiety, provides information, and addresses pain/discomfort and safety.
The ED RN assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, as well as their families and support systems.
The ED RN connects with patients and families during triage.
They identify initial management of patients of all age groups and assign care priorities in accordance with established Triage Standards.
The ED RN establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, and provides frequent updates.
They conduct primary assessments of critical needs, detect and document major deviations from norms, and accurately identify necessary interventions.
Using direct observation, patient/family interviews, EMS reports, and data, the ED RN conducts secondary assessments.
They identify contributing factors, health history, and events or activities preceding emergent health events.
The ED RN assesses the psychosocial needs of individuals, including family dynamics, and documents any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse.
Reassessments are conducted to identify patient responses to treatment or changes in condition, and appropriate responses are made.
The ED RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
They teach others as appropriate and delegate tasks consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice.
The ED RN understands the responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies.
Preparation of patients, parents, or families for diagnostic procedures and treatments is a key responsibility.
The ED RN makes appropriate referrals for post-emergency care and teaches patients what is needed for continued care at home.
The ED RN assesses patient and family learning styles and structures education sessions for maximum understanding.
They ask questions to evaluate retention of key points in education and discharge instructions.
The ED RN seeks to understand what is most important to patients and families, recognizing them as the central focus of care and services.
Creating a Healing Environment is embraced as a key element of professional nursing practice.
The ED RN keeps patients and significant others informed of care processes, anticipating patient and family needs.
They maintain awareness of patient conditions throughout their Emergency Department visit and update communication boards accordingly.
