PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL PRACTICE
• Performs direct patient care in accordance to performance standards listed on Skills Checklist according to the defined patient population of neonates, pediatrics, adults and geriatrics for the Emergency department and/or trauma patient.
o Demonstrates ability to perform admission, discharge, transfer procedures.
o Utilizes modes of communication to provide continuity of care and to deliver safe care.
o Cares for the patient undergoing an invasive and/or operative procedure.
o Assesses and promotes optimum neurological functioning including pain management.
o Assesses and promotes optimum respiratory and cardiovascular function.
o Demonstrates ability to care for the patient with diabetes and other endocrine challenges.
o Assesses and promotes optimal gastrointestinal functions.
o Assesses fluid electrolyte balance, including blood administration.
o Assesses and promotes optimal musculoskeletal function.
o Assesses and maintains optimal skin integrity, including preventative measures.
o Assesses and supports genitourinary function.
o Demonstrates ability to administer medications and has knowledge of actions, route of administration, dosage, and side effects.
o Demonstrates appropriate patient safety practices.
o Provides nursing interventions to assist the patient during the end of life process.

o Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to perform during trauma care for the following patient presentations:
o Assures each patient receives health care excellence aims of:  safe, effective, patient centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care.
• For shift worked, coordinates shift case-load of patients
• Delegates and directs care delivery appropriately
• Coordinates care effectively
• Accurately completes ED log with patient information and disposition
• Utilizes critical thinking skills in the application of the nursing process in the Emergency Department:
• Completes patient triage to identify patient medical treatment needs and intervention level. Records patient triage
• supports the initiation of the  patient log via tracking board including update of medical diagnosis at disposition. 
• Performs focused  nursing assessment for presenting condition
• 1)may use the patient/family, EMS, chart, community agencies as a source of information  
• Based on focused nursing assessment initiates ED standing orders. 
• Collaborates with Provider in the treatment plan and patient response to care delivery
• Keeps patient and/or significant other informed of care delivery plan
• Continues to reassess and revise the established care plan in relation to the patient’s response to, and the outcomes of the care provided as condition warrants
• Supports and develops Provider discharge plan of care. 
• Implements patient/family education based on ED diagnosis, and individualized needs, including actions to take if condition worsens
• If condition does not meet Melham admission criteria, supports patient stabilization and 
• transfer to a higher level of care

ADMINSTRAIVE PRACTICE
• Oversees and provides feedback on work performance of the shift staff and other members of the health care team and provides feedback to the  House Supervisor, and/or Manager. 
• Functions as RN caseload coordinator on assigned patient load.
• Serves as a preceptor to students and staff as requested.
• Follows chain of command to resolve issues or challenges.
