Job Title: Neonatal Intensive Care Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: NICU Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: Nights Hours per Shift: 34.50 Experience: Minimum of 1 year in emergency or critical care setting. Minimum of 1 year in pediatric setting. License: Currently registered as a professional nurse in the state. Certifications: NRP ACLS BLS PALS Must-Have: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required. Description: Neonatal intensive care registered nurses provide critical care to premature and sick newborns. Utilize the nursing process in the provision of direct patient care. Responsible and accountable for prescribing, delegating, and coordinating all care provided to assigned patients. Ensure a newborn’s critical care treatment is secure. Delivery of care is based on the standards of care and practices established by the nursing department and other policies and procedures. Diagnose and treat human responses to actual and potential health problems through services such as case finding, health teaching, health counseling, and provision of supportive or restorative care. Supervise patient care provided by licensed practical nurses, registered nurses on permit, nursing attendants, technicians, and supplemental staff. Assess the immediate and continuing care needs of the patient and parent(s). Provide respiratory care support ensuring that ventilator equipment is functioning properly. Ensure items such as tubing are patent, tape and tubing are in place, oxygen saturation levels remain at appropriate levels, and blood gases show good oxygen exchange. Perform chest suction when needed. Feed NICU patients via bottle, naso-gastric tubes, or IV. Set up IV pumps and maintain feeding rates. Measure abdominal girth and check for stools for blood. Start IVs and draw blood as needed. Assess IV and draw sites for skin breakdown and skin damage. Work with physicians and upper-level nursing to develop and assist with treatment and examination of patients. Develop comprehensive and current plans of care which include physical needs, caregiver teaching, discharge planning, home care, and psychosocial/spiritual needs. Provide direct patient care based on assessed needs and the medical regimen. Oversee and ensure the provision of all aspects of care for the patient. Supervise the care provided by other nursing personnel as defined in the scope of practice. Observe, evaluate, document, and communicate to relevant team members the patient’s response to illness and/or therapeutic modalities. Ensure timely reassessment of patient responses to treatment and significant changes in patient condition and/or diagnosis. Coordinate the overall plan of care to ensure implementation of nursing interventions and consistency with medical regimen. Establish priorities for care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and initiate follow-up as indicated to ensure timely provision of patient care and therapeutic modalities. Assure the plan of care integrates age-specific needs as defined in the unit scope of care. Accept responsibility and accountability for nursing interventions and outcomes based on professional clinical judgments. Participate in quality improvement activities related to patient care delivery and the development of nursing/hospital standards. Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively, manage stressful situations appropriately, and facilitate interpersonal relationships with other disciplines. Assume charge responsibilities as delegated by the nurse/manager designee. Ensure appropriate coverage of all patients by assisting and relieving co-workers. Maintain a safe, therapeutic environment for patients and staff. Participate in meetings, committees, conferences, and educational programs. Participate in research and pilot projects supported by the nursing department.
