Job Description:
– Primary patient population includes cardiovascular surgery and vascular surgery, such as open heart surgery (e.g., CABG, AVR, MVR, Bentall, TAVR), thoracic lung surgery (e.g., lobectomy, thoracotomy), esophagogastrectomy, AAA (open and endovascular), fem-pop bypass, carotid endarterectomies, as well as overflow medical cardiology patients with heart failure, DKA, chest pain, sepsis, heart block, etc.
– Unit has 40 cardiac surgery stepdown beds, with approximately 100 total staff members.
– Night shift includes 1 charge RN (routinely out of staffing), 13 RNs, 4 PCTs, and 0.33 HUC.
– Patient ratios are 1:5 patients per RN and 1:13 for PCTs.
– Uses Baxter IV pumps, CADD epidural pumps, and various lifts; EMR is Cerner.
– Preferred experience includes prior CV surgery and vascular surgery population experience (e.g., open heart, TAVR, lobectomy, AAA repair, and fem-pop bypass) within a year, and CVICU experience.
– Typical procedures performed on the unit include epidural management, chest tube management, tube feedings, IV gluccomander, and cardiac gtt management (e.g., phenylephrine, dobutamine, dopamine, milrinone, cardizem, amiodarone, insulin, heparin, nitroglycerin, ketamine).
– Best personality fit is a team player who enjoys a fast-paced environment and is flexible.
– Floating areas include any stepdown (1:5 ratios) or medical-surgical (1:6-7 ratios) unit, and ER inpatient holding area (1:6).
– Dress code is all navy, white tops/navy bottoms, or all white.
– Weekend requirements include a minimum of 6 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday day/night) per 6-week schedule period. Flexible to work holiday shifts.
